British Gas Solar Export Tariffs: SEG Rates 2026

Checked 10 July 2026: British Gas publishes different export rates according to import supply, system capacity and customer type. Its standard household comparison is 12p/kWh for British Gas electricity customers with systems up to 15kW, versus 3p/kWh for a non-British-Gas import customer.

Can a non-customer use British Gas SEG?

Yes. British Gas says import supply and export payments are separate, but the broader non-customer route pays less. Compare the annual gain from moving import supply with the new import rates and standing charge.

Application and payment timing

British Gas says its online application can take up to four weeks to set up. It pays every three months and aims to pay within 28 days of receiving the latest validated export reading. A communicating smart meter normally supplies readings automatically; otherwise British Gas can request one.

What to prepare

• MCS or accepted certification and proof of ownership.
• Half-hourly smart/export meter details and an export reading.
• System capacity, because the 15kW boundary affects the supplied-customer tariff.
• Export MPAN or information needed for registration.
• Confirmation that the same export is not paid under another SEG or FIT export arrangement.

Battery and import products

British Gas also advertises an import tariff for home-battery owners. Treat that as an import-cost decision separate from the SEG rate. Model charging windows, losses, standing charges and any tariff exclusions together.

Why the 15kW boundary needs checking

The public comparison changes at 15kW for British Gas import customers. Use the declared total installed capacity from the MCS certificate or commissioning documents, including later extensions. Do not calculate it from a rounded marketing description such as “a 15kW system” without checking whether the recorded capacity is at, below or above the boundary.

Application sequence

1. Confirm the correct route for import supplier, system size and customer type.
2. Submit the online application and requested certification.
3. Provide a clear export-meter photograph if automatic readings are not available.
4. Wait for the export MPAN registration and tariff confirmation.
5. Keep the opening reading and start date with the contract for later payment checks.

A FIT customer can keep an eligible generation payment but cannot be paid twice for the same export. Compare the existing FIT export arrangement before opting out, particularly where export is still deemed rather than metered.
