A typical 4.5 kWp home solar panel system costs about £7,600, according to Energy Saving Trust. Your quote may be higher or lower, depending on your roof and the work needed. A battery costs extra.

What should your quote include?
- The panels, mounting frame and inverter, which converts their electricity for use in your home.
- Scaffolding, roof access, cables and any electrical work.
- Installation, testing and the paperwork for your local electricity network.
- Your MCS installation certificate, warranties and instructions.
- VAT and a clear list of any extra charges.

Difficult access, damaged tiles or repairs can add to the work.
The equipment
The number and type of panels, inverter and optional battery affect the price.
Electrical work
Your fuse box, cables or other parts of the installation may need upgrading.
Ask for a separate battery price
A battery stores electricity for later. Ask the installer to show the price with and without one, using the same panels. This makes it easier to decide whether the extra savings are worth the cost.

Compare prices for similar-sized systems
Enter the price and system size from a quote. The price per kWp helps you compare systems of a similar size. Check that they include the same equipment and work.

Compare any battery, roof repairs and extra electrical work separately. Warranties and aftercare matter too.
Compare the complete offer
Try to get three written quotes from MCS-certified installers. MCS is a certification scheme for small renewable energy installations. You can check an installer in its directory.
Look at the expected yearly electricity generation as well as the price. Ask the installer to explain any large difference between quotes and check what happens if the survey changes the work.
