Solar Panel Grants UK: Funding and ECO4
Solar grants, made simple
Can you get help to pay for solar?
There is no solar grant for every UK home. Some people can get help through a council, an energy company or a housing provider. The rules depend on your home, income and area.
Warm Homes: Local Grant
This scheme is for some private homes in England. Help is arranged through the local council. Solar panels may be part of the work, but they are not promised.
The home will often need an energy rating of D to G. This is called an EPC rating. Income is also checked. A council survey decides what work is right for the home.
ECO4
ECO4 is a scheme run through larger energy companies in Great Britain. It helps some homes save energy. Solar may be part of a wider plan, but ECO4 is not a simple solar voucher.
A match for benefits or income does not mean final approval. The home and the planned work must also pass the scheme checks.
Help for social housing
Councils and housing providers can get money to improve some rented homes. Tenants do not normally apply for a personal solar grant. The landlord chooses which homes and work are included.
Loans are not grants
A loan must be paid back, even if the interest rate is low or zero. Ask for the full credit terms. Do not accept the word “free” if you are signing a finance deal.
Zero VAT is not a grant
Some fitted solar panels and batteries have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. This can lower the price. It does not pay for the system.
Check a claim in five steps
- Ask for the exact name of the scheme.
- Find the scheme on GOV.UK, your council site or Ofgem.
- Ask who makes the final choice.
- Ask who owns the panels and whether any loan or roof deal is involved.
- Get every promise in writing before you sign.

Separate tax relief from grants: a normal qualifying installation may receive 0% solar VAT at the invoice stage without being a grant-funded job.
ECO4 form check: learn the difference between an Ofgem evidence form, a council Flex form and a marketing lead form.
Optional next step
Not sure a grant will apply? Compare paid options too.
Grant eligibility is specific. If you may not qualify, a normal quote can still show the realistic cost of installing solar.
