How to Compare Solar Quotes and Find an MCS Installer

Use quotes to turn general solar figures into a design for your own roof. Compare at least three written offers, keep the assumptions consistent and judge the system rather than the sales pitch.

Independent guidance: Energy Saving Trust recommends getting quotes from at least three installers and checking that they are MCS certified.

Compare quotes for your home

Describe the property and the work once, then compare the responses you receive. Treat the quote route as a starting point rather than a recommendation.

Verify independently: check the exact business in the official MCS installer directory for solar PV before agreeing to work. Ask who will survey, install and issue the MCS certificate.

Give every installer the same starting information

Your property

Roof direction, usable area, shade, roof condition, postcode and any planning constraints.

Your electricity use

Annual kWh from a recent bill, when the home uses power, and whether an EV or heat pump is likely.

Your battery preference

Ask for panels-only and battery options separately so storage does not hide the underlying solar price.

Compare the full installed offer

  • Total installed price, VAT treatment and payment schedule.
  • Panel count, panel model, inverter, optimisers and usable battery capacity.
  • Scaffolding, roof work, electrical upgrades, monitoring and grid paperwork.
  • Forecast annual generation, household self-use and export assumptions.
  • Product, workmanship and performance warranties, including who handles a claim.
  • Cooling-off terms, survey conditions and what could change the final price.

Keep the savings estimate separate from the sales decision

No savings forecast can guarantee future generation, electricity prices, export rates or household behaviour. Put each quote through the same conservative assumptions and ask why any forecast is materially higher than the others.
