Solar Quote Checklist: Check Before You Sign

Solar quotes, made simple

Use this checklist before you sign. A good quote should show what you are buying, the full price and how the savings were worked out.

Stop if a company rushes you. Take time to read the quote. Ask for any promise to be put in writing.

1. Check the full price

  • The total price, including VAT.
  • Scaffolding, roof access and electrical work.
  • The battery shown as a separate price.
  • Any cost that may change after the survey.
  • The deposit amount and how it is protected.

2. Check the system

  • The number and model of the panels.
  • The system size in kWp. This is its tested size.
  • The inverter model. This turns solar power into power your home can use.
  • The battery’s usable size in kWh, if one is included.
  • The expected power made in one year.

3. Check the savings

  • How much solar power the company thinks you will use at home.
  • How much spare power it thinks you will send to the grid.
  • The electricity prices used in the estimate.
  • The export payment rate used.
  • Any future price rise used in the maths.

4. Check the company and cover

  • Find the installer on the MCS website.
  • Read the cancellation and complaints steps.
  • Check the panel, inverter, battery and fitting warranties.
  • Ask who helps if the installer closes.
  • Make sure network and MCS papers are included.

Your quote pack should survive the sales call

Ask for a copy you can download or print. It should include the quote, roof design, generation forecast, contract, cancellation details, payment plan, protection documents and warranties. Do not rely on a sales screen or spoken promise that you cannot check later.

Five final yes-or-no questions

  1. Company: Is the legal company taking your money clear?
  2. System: Are the exact models, roof layout, total kWp and expected yearly kWh clear?
  3. Price: Does the total include VAT, scaffolding, electrical work and every known extra?
  4. Savings: Can you see the import price, export rate and home-use assumptions, and test a cautious case?
  5. Responsibility: Does the contract say who handles payments, warranties, DNO work, planning checks and the handover pack?

If one answer is no, write down what is missing and ask for a new version before you sign. Check the company separately in the installer guide, compare the figures on the three-quote worksheet, and use the planning guide if your roof or property may need consent.

Before you sign

Compare at least two quotes if you can. Make sure they cover the same size system and the same work. Ask each company to explain any large difference.
